Accidental intravenous injection of bupivacaine: a complication of obstetrical epidural anaesthesia. Case report.

چکیده
A primigravid patient in labour had an epileptiform convulsion following the first "topup" injection of bupivacaine 50 mg into the epidural space. The fit was treated successfully by artificial ventilation with oxygen and there were no subsequent ill effects in the mother. The foetus was born several hours later in good condition. The maternal venous plasma bupivacaine concentration was found to have been 2.3 yug/ml during the acute episode. An electroencephalogram performed on the patient after discharge from hospital was reported as normal.

متن کاملEvaluation of S1 motor block to determine a safe, reliable test dose for epidural analgesia.
BACKGROUND Accidental intrathecal injection of bupivacaine during epidural analgesia in labour remains a hazard, with the potential to cause total spinal anaesthesia and maternal collapse. Sacral block appears early after intrathecal injections compared with epidural ones, and we therefore used SI motor block to determine a safe and reliable test dose for epidural catheter misplacement. METHO...
متن کاملAn unusual complication following caudal epidural steroid injection: a case report.
The authors present a case in which paraplegia developed following administration of caudal epidural steroid injection (ESI) and discuss the different pathophysiological mechanisms involved. The authors strongly recommend that 0.5% bupivacaine should be used with caution for caudal epidural injection.
متن کاملClinical Reports Respiratory arrest follow- ing intrathecal injection of sufentanil and bupiva- caine in a parturient
Purpose: To present a case of respiratory arrest following the use of intrathecal sufentanil and bupivacaine for combined spinal-epidural anaesthesia in a healthy labouring parturient, Cl in ical Features: A 20-yr-old term parturient received I 0 pg sufentanil and 2,5 mg bupivacaine intrathecally as part of a combined spinal-epidural technique for labour analgesia. She had received no previous ...

The technique of cervical epidural anaesthesia (CEA) was first described by Dogliotti in 1933 for upper thoracic procedures. Cervical epidural anaesthesia can be administered in surgeries of neck, upper arm and chest. It has gained popularity due to its safety, relative bloodless field, stable hemodynamic, minimal morbidity and early postoperative recovery. The technique has become popular as i...
